The Crane Bride
Illustration based on an old Japanese fairy tale about a woodcutter
who rescues a crane. In gratitude, she secretly turns into a woman,
shows up on his doorstep and marries him. When they run out of money,
she goes into a room by herself to weave beautiful silk for them to
sell. Of course, the woodcutter gets curious and has to peek--and
finds a crane weaving silk from her own feathers. The crane, of course,
then flies away, never to be seen again.
This is the instant before the crane sheds the last of her human life
and flies away...
